They don't have much in the way of protection, nor do they have much in the way of ensuring that their lands will continue to produce.
I also just like the idea of having alchemical plants on hand for useful potions and such. Make the rare things less rare and more viable. So-roof top gardens, or better, community gardens, would be a good way to ensure we have supplies on hand.
